About the event
Celebrating Black History Month, let's immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of Afro-Cuban dances with Cuban maestro Yorgenis Danger Garcia, visiting Canada for the very first time. Yorgenis Danger is the embodiment of everything Afro-Cuban; an accomplished professional dancer from ISA (Instituto Superior de Artes) with over 20 years of experience, he will lead a series of workshops that will take us through the history of African dances brought to Cuba, and their evolution.
This imaginary dance trip will begin exploring manifestations brought from present-day Nigeria and Benin --through the Orishas-- and then we'll take a look at our Afro-Haitian-Cuban legacy with their vibrant dances, concluding with Cuba's very own Rumba.
SUNDAY, February 25th
From Vudú and Gagá to Rumba Columbia: it's hard not to get excited about a masterclass like this! Discover the beauty and liveliness of Vudú and Gagá, two dances brought to Eastern Cuba before the Haitian Revolution took place. After burning some serious calories, we'll venture into the world of Cuban Rumba's most glamorous manifestation: Columbia. Initially only danced by men, Rumba Columbia is nowadays performed by everyone thanks to Cuban women's determination to bring equality of enjoyment to this dance. Sunday's masterclasses are a rare opportunity to learn uniquely beautiful Afro-Cuban dances. This is the first time a Rumba Columbia workshop will be taught by an expert, in Vancouver.
