About the event

Celebrating Black History Month, let's immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of Afro-Cuban dances with Cuban maestro Yorgenis Danger Garcia, visiting Canada for the very first time. Yorgenis Danger is the embodiment of everything Afro-Cuban; an accomplished professional dancer from ISA (Instituto Superior de Artes) with over 20 years of experience, he will lead a series of workshops that will take us through the history of African dances brought to Cuba, and their evolution.

This imaginary dance trip will begin exploring manifestations brought from present-day Nigeria and Benin --through the Orishas-- and then we'll take a look at our Afro-Haitian-Cuban legacy with their vibrant dances, concluding with Cuba's very own Rumba.

SATURDAY, February 24th

Orishas Masterclass feat. Changó & Yemayá: in this dance masterclass we will rhythmically harness both the female and male energies of these powerful Orishas to experience the joy of expressing what each of them represent. Changó is the Orisha of thunder, drumming, dancing, fire, and male strength, and is famous for his love of partying. Yemaya is the goddess of the ocean and the mother of all living things and is revered for her nurturing and protective nature. Yemaya is closely connected to fertility, motherhood, and female power. Yemaya is also seen as a powerful and versatile deity, with aspects that range from warm and nurturing to strong and warrior-like.
